Agenda

19:00 〜 19:30 Doors open

Grab a drink and catch up with your fellow Rubyists.

19:30 〜 19:55 Suiren: how an engineer learns kanji Marion Kamoike-Bouguet

When I started learning Japanese, I played a little game. I searched my environment for unfamiliar words, then tried to guess the reading and meaning by matching each kanji to a word I already knew. Little by little, I formed a mental web of connections that helped with memorization. Kanjis don't have to be things you cram into your brain one by one, they can be part of a broader, smarter context.

I’ve just released Suiren, a learning tool that applies this mental map to a network of 6000+ words from the JLPT corpus. It’s gotten an amazing response from Japanese learners around the world, and I’m excited to talk about language study, mental models and network generation in d3.
